Reading & Reflection Lenten Group 2023

Mondays beginning March 6, 2023 (4-6 sessions depending upon the wishes of participants). 7:00 pm sharp until 8.00 pm/8:30 pm.

We’ll read excerpts from the Long Text of Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich, based in part on the Oxford University Press edition, with some amendments from the Medieval English text.

Julian of Norwich (c. 8 November 1342 – c. 1416) was a mystic, Christian anchorite, and theological innovator who developed a psychology of the emotions which approached suffering through a spirituality of compassion for others and love of the world. Julian’s Revelations of Divine Love is recognized as the first book known to have been composed by a woman in English.

Unlike book clubs or other reading groups, there is no preparatory reading. You just sign on to Zoom and we take turns reading. A facilitator will ask for volunteers and then help initiate discussion. If you miss a week, no problem: join us next time. There is no need to purchase a copy of the book since we will use the share screen feature, allowing everyone to read the text in large print once you log onto Zoom.

Golden Rules

  • Listen to everyone nonjudgmentally.
  • Treat all participants with respect.
  • There are no definitive answers but we will always still strive for enlightenment.
Although hosted by St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Slaterville Springs, New York, anyone with an interest may join regardless of religious beliefs, national origin, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, or other important social identity markers.

When we read Teresa of Ávila’s Interior Castle for 14 weeks in 2021, we were fortunate to have up to 14 participants, some from Brooklyn, one from Alexandria, Virginia, and others from Oswego County, and the rest lived across Tompkins County. One participant was raised Sunni Muslim and claimed that he had never felt more welcome by a group of Christians.
